The Kardashians Episode 6 Recap
Kim Kardashian, a self-styled IRL Elle Woods, raises questions about "real" social justice, while Kanye takes the kids on a very real fire truck ride. And more!
It is early Tuesday morning and I’m writing this on fading morphine (I think it’s morphine, at least) because I’m in the hospital experiencing a medical crisis (edit from three days later: here’s the rambling backstory on that), so unfortunately one of the most vital episodes we’ve seen of the season will be recapped in a compromised state. Let’s get into it nonetheless!
To quote my Vogue piece:
True to its title—“This is a Life or Death Situation”—episode six of The Kardashians struck an urgent tone. While awaiting the results of her baby bar exam, Kim Kardashian works with organizers and celebrities alike to convince the governor of Oklahoma to commute the sentence of death row inmate Julius Jones. This is the first episode to truly showcase Kim’s life as a self-styled activist, and in the process, it explores the optics of public service. We’re posed, yet again, with what might be the essential question of Kim Kardashian’s career: is she for real?
1. LOL they actually “replayed the tape” according to Kendall’s meta command at the end of the last episode.
2. By doing this, Kendall managed to confirm that her truth had been the objective reality, something we often wish we could do in our own conflicts. Wow! Ceaseless self-surveillance comes with some benefits!
3. Now Kourtney is explaining why she doesn’t want to talk to Scott about his party angst.
The Kardashians have a successful history of creating catchphrases (“bible,” “you’re doing amazing sweetie,” “least exciting to look at,” etc). Now, sometimes, I think they strive to create new ones.
(I’m a fan of this Buzzfeed article, which breaks down the science of the catchphrase)
Anyway, Kourtney’s catchphrase in this scene — specifically, its emphasis on the word “subscribe” — is salient to the online streaming programs we all engage with today. Kourtney is literally referring to their lives as a TV show, a stream she is done with.
4. Notice the casual Balenciaga ad in that drone shot?
